Abstract

More women are gainfully employed than at any other period of U.S. history. There has been a particularly rapid growth in the labor force participation rate of women with children. In fact, the labor participation rate for women with children under the age of 6 has doubled since 1970. By 1991, 60% of these mothers were gainfully employed, compared to 30% in 1970 (Institute for Women's Policy Research, 1992, p. 3).
